Dr Julia L Newton

Julia is a Consultant in Rheumatology/Sport and Exercise Medicine at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust. She worked for 15 years, until 2022, as a Senior Sports Physician at the English Institute of Sport in Bath. She is the Associate Dean Thames Valley NHS England and Vice-President of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine.

Julia qualified from Manchester University in 1994 and completed her training as a Rheumatologist, sub specialising in Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM), in Oxford in 2006. During this time, she completed a DPhil at the University of Oxford and a Diploma in SEM at UCL. She set up the Oxford NHS service in musculoskeletal, sport and exercise medicine, which provides services for adults and children of all levels.

In addition, she began working for the English Institute of Sport in 2008, which provides a network of medical services for elite athletes in Olympic and Paralympic sport, including athletics, swimming, modern pentathlon, gymnastics, as well as netball and women’s rugby.

Julia has extensive multi-sport experience in athletes of all ages and has particular interest in child and adolescent sport and exercise medicine, female athlete problems, bone stress, bone health and issues related to high volume training. Julia has an active research and education portfolio and she lectures at national and international events. She set up the highly successful sport and exercise medicine training scheme in the Oxford Deanery in 2007. Personally, she is a keen runner and equestrian.
